If you’ve seen the news lately, you know that the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) recently overturned Roe V Wade. Our wonderful artist over at RoseAriaArt on Etsy made stickers for the news, and will be donating 20% of the profits from those to NARAL at the end of this month! NARAL is a pro-choice organization that not only helps people find ways to get accessible and safe abortions but also educates on reproductive health and laws around the United States. We at Horrible Shirts are so proud of Rose and wanted to talk more about the subject at hand. Let’s learn a little more about Roe V Wade, NARAL, and what you can do to help!

Starting off, let’s discuss what Roe V Wade is, and why it is so important. The question of the court case was if the Constitution recognized a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy by abortion. The fourteenth amendment ended up being a big factor in the case and why the law exists now. The fourteenth amendment gives a right to privacy to all citizens of the United States, thus including the right to decide what to do with one’s own body, as that is considered a private matter. The reason this was argued in the first place, and argued about again, is because of laws and morals that aim to protect the potential of human life. The Roe V Wade court case was decided in October 1973 and has recently been overturned by SCOTUS in June 2022.

You may be wondering why this is so important, so let’s talk about it. Firstly, this is still a matter of bodily autonomy that was taken away from people who could give birth. The ability to become pregnant can start at a very young age. Most commonly, as soon as one gets their period they can then become pregnant, and sometimes it can happen before that. Everyone’s body is very different, but being pregnant can happen before one’s teen years. Taking away the right to choose to get an abortion stops young kids who either didn’t have a choice in the matter or who weren’t fully educated on the subject, from getting safe abortions or giving unsafe pregnancies.

There’s also the case in which pregnancies can end up as ectopic pregnancies. This is where the fertilized egg gets stuck in the fallopian tubes and cannot survive outside of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies can only be treated by terminating the egg or getting an abortion, as it can be fatal to both the fetus and the mother. Since abortion laws are left up to the individual states to decide, it is unclear where exceptions will be made regarding life-threatening pregnancies like this. There are many instances like this where pregnancies can go wrong and become dangerous for the mother.

Not to mention many other factors go into pregnancies. Factors like financial situations, housing, age, and so much more. Not everyone can afford a pregnancy, the bill may be too much and one may not be able to support a child. The foster system isn’t all that great either, and there are already so many kids in it. According to Children’s Rights, there are about 424,000 children in the foster system on any given day. Forced abortions would, unfortunately, only increase that number.

With all that information, it’s time to learn about how you can help. The organization RoseAriaArt is donating to is called NARAL. NARAL helps to fight for reproductive rights and freedom, along with educating people on the issues at hand. They speak on subjects like abortion access, birth control, pregnancy discrimination, and paid family leave. On their site, you can check laws in your state, along with the policies there and up-to-date information.
